To the TUC 31 December 1987 I think it is very important that the labour and trade union movement mark the 40th anniversary of the National Health Service by organising a massive demonstration early in 1988.
You may have read in today's newspapers that patients in a Wolverhampton hospital ward threatened with closure tied themselves to their beds with their bandages to stop the management closing the ward.
One of the union officials involved got it just right when he said, otherwise the NHS will not survive' This kind of spirit and resistance must become a feature of the whole labour and trade union movement and I urge the general council of the TUC at its next meeting to formulate plans for a massive national demonstration in defence of the NHS. people in every community who are yearning for action to be taken.
I look forward to a positive reply.
